As a lovebird owner you may be wondering whether you should step up to an aviary from the cage you currently have. There are both pros and cons for choosing an aviary over a cage, especially if you only have one or two birds. If you have more, you'll definitely need an aviary to give them enough space.
Cleaning
Expect to do a lot more cleaning when you own an aviary instead of a regular bird cage. While there won't be any extra droppings or feathers to clean up, the space you need to clean is going to be larger. Just make sure when you are shopping for an aviary that the bottom is easy to clean and is very accessible. If it is a walk-in type, this should be no problem at all.
If you have the time and energy to keep an aviary clean, it is nice to give your lovebirds the extra room to fly around. If, on the other hand, your time is limited, it's not fair to either you or the birds to purchase such a large cage. Your bird's health will be at risk if you invest in a cage that you can't keep clean.
Back to nature
The nice thing about aviaries is they can be made to resemble the natural habitat of the lovebird. Since it is so much roomier than a birdcage you can put larger sticks and branches into it along with a lot of toys.
Welcoming new lovebirds
You'll also have room to enlarge your family of birds. If you've been thinking about getting a few more lovebirds because you just can't get enough of them, an aviary is perfect.
You'll find yourself getting a lot more out of your lovebirds when you house them in aviaries. A lot of bird owners comment that they feel guilty seeing their birds live a regular cage and wish they had the room for a larger one. This is perfectly understandable.
Housing an aviary
If you are planning on getting an aviary to put outside, finding the right spot for it won't be much of a problem. It is more of an issue trying to find enough space inside your home. You won't want to put it right in the middle of things because the birds will need a quiet place to sleep at night. On the other hand, you don't want to stick this large bird cage in a spot that's too out of the way where the birds will be ignored. If you want to keep an aviary inside your home, it is always best to figure out exactly where you can put it before making a purchase.
One thing to keep in mind is that an aviary has been designed with birds in mind. Any type of bird will be happier if it is given more space, but at the same time, it is a lot more work for the owner. You're going to have to be the one that makes the final decision whether you have the time to commit to the upkeep of an aviary to make your birds happier or whether now isn't the right time.
