Preparing a Breeding Program
The popular image of lovebirds is of two birds snuggling together on a branch. Bonded lovebirds can be a joy to watch as they preen each other or wrangle over a toy or bit of food. Because of this, they have become very popular among beginning breeders. However, breeding lovebirds entails much more than putting two lovebirds together and hanging up a nest box. The most important thing to consider when deciding to breed lovebirds is how much time and energy you have. Breeding lovebirds need to be in top condition; they cannot be on seed-only diets or be forced to live in dirty cages. They must be supplied with a balanced, if they are raise healthy clutches of babies. You also need to be prepared for emergencies that can arise during the breeding process, from egg binding to parental aggression toward chicks.
