Lovebird Species and Varieties - The Non Eye-Ring Species

Species name: Agapornis swinderniana swinderniana
Appearance:   The body is green with a paler green on the head. They have a distinctive black collar around the neck and yellow below the collar.                           The rump is grayish blue, flights are black, and the beak is a dark gray.

Origin: Western and Central Africa

The Swindern's love bird was inadvertenly misspelled when its official name was chosen. It is more correctly called the Swinderen's love bird and is commonly called the black collared lovebird. Not much is known about this species. Early attempts to keep these birds in captivity failed miserably. They have never been successfully bred in captivity. One of the issues is the fact that they eat a very specialized diet of fresh fig seeds and occasional millet. They are so rare that one would be hardpressed to find even a photograph of a living specimen of this species.
