Weaned or Unweaned? PDF Print
Another persistent and patently false belief is that a lovebird you hand-feed yourself will make a better pet store. There is absolutely no need to buy an unweaned baby lovebird, especially if you have never hand-fed a bird, Why Buy Weaned Birds?. The risks you take in doing this without adequate training far outweigh the benefits of being the mama bird. A justweaned, well-socialized baby lovebird will transfer its bond to the new owner within a matter of days, sometimes even in a few hours. As long as it feels safe and has a good home environment, it will calm down and accept you as the new flock.
The dangers of an inexperienced person had-feeding a baby lovebird can lead to tragedy or very high veterinarian bills. Some of the risks are formula that is too hot and that burns the crop, formula that is too cold and causes sour or slow crop, aspirated formula that causes pneumonia or death, and undernourishment of the bird that causes health or development problems. If you are not familiar with the needs of the species and such variables as the maximum acceptable weight loss during weaning, you can easily harm or kill a baby bird.
One of the best ways to get a truly tame, sweet pet lovebird is to reserve one that is currently being hand-fed. You can then pick up the bird once the breederĀ  or pet store has fully weaned it. Begin handling your lovebird on a daily basis and it will quickly transfer the bond to you.
