Personal references from other owners of lovebirds can be an excellent way to find a quality bird for a pet. If you already have a relationship with a veterinarian for other pets, you can ask him or her to recommend a particular breeder. Many veterinarians have regular clients who breed lovebirds, and they will have a good sense of who uses proper avicultural practices and raises quality lovebirds.
The worst thing you can do is decide to buy a lovebird on impulse. Do not buy a lovebird just because you feel sorry for it sitting in a cage at the pet store. By educating yourself, you will not make the most common mistakes, such as buying a very untamed, unmanageable bird or buying an unhealthy bird.
