Understanding Lovebirds
|
Lovebirds, with their short, rounded wings, are strong, fast, and extremely maneuverable fliers. In the wild, they spend several miles on the wing each day, which is good to remember when we raise them in cages and aviaries.
In captivity, they adapt to limited flight possibilities by stretching on a perch and beating their wings with a strong and rapid motion. (Actually, this behavior is rather common with all cage and aviary lovebirds in captivity.) During the breeding season, you can often see a lovebird female leave the nest, especially when she is brooding, just to "stretch her wings" with these flight simulations.
